She’s Got It Together Podcast!
Hey everyone, it’s Jessica here ready to dish about the wonderful world of traveling with kids! In our latest podcast episode, my sister Sam and I swapped stories and strategies for hitting the road (or friendly skies) with little ones in tow. Buckle up, it’s gonna be a wild ride!
First things first – flexibility is the name of the game. No matter how much you plan and prepare, there will always be unexpected hiccups along the way. Blowout diaper on a plane? Toddler meltdown in the car? It happens to the best of us. The key is staying calm and rolling with the punches. Easier said than done, I know, but trust me – your kids will pick up on that frazzled energy faster than you can say “are we there yet?!”
One thing that’s helped keep my girls entertained on long trips is packing each of them a special bag filled with new activities. We’re talking coloring books, silly snacks (reindeer poop trail mix, anyone?), crafts, the works. Anything that adds a little novelty and excitement to the journey. Sam also swears by bringing along extra toys just for the occasion, especially if you’re flying.
And speaking of flying, let’s talk about the great debate – screen time. While we all want to limit those devices as much as possible, there’s a time and place for a little digital distraction. Like when you’re stuck on a crowded plane with a tired, cranky kiddo. No shame in busting out the iPad to save everyone’s sanity! Just try to balance it with some offline activities too.
Of course, travel looks a little different when you’re juggling an infant as well. Sam quickly learned that everything revolves around nap schedules and feeding times with her son Bo. Her biggest piece of advice? Plan for extra stops and don’t try to cram too much into each day. Oh, and never EVER wake a sleeping baby on a road trip. That’s just asking for trouble.
Packing is a whole other beast when you’re bringing along a baby. From diapers to pack n’ plays to ALL the gear, it adds up fast. One genius hack Sam discovered is using a hanging shoe organizer to corral all of Bo’s clothing and accessories. Each pocket can fit a complete outfit (or extra onesies, socks, you name it) so you can just grab and go once you arrive at your destination. Brilliant!
Another game-changer for traveling with an infant? Babywearing. Being hands-free in the airport is a total lifesaver, especially if you have other kiddos to wrangle. Just make sure to check your carrier’s regulations before attempting to wear during takeoff and landing. Safety first, y’all.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is making memories as a family. Even if those memories involve a few (okay, a lot) of meltdowns and chaos along the way. Embrace the imperfections and focus on the quality time together. That’s what your kids will remember most – not the perfectly planned itinerary or Insta-worthy accommodations.
So here’s to the wild, messy, wonderful world of traveling with kids! May your snacks be plentiful, your screen time guilt be minimal, and your adventures be unforgettable.
Pack those bags and hit the road, mama!
